Depending on tumor size and its relation to the size of the breast, the distance to the skin and the nipple, breast cancer surgery can be performed either breast conserving or by mastectomy.
If chemotherapy is indicated because of an aggressive biology of the tumor, it is in most cases beneficial to start with the chemotherapy before surgery (=neoadjuvant chemotherapy).
Hereditary breast cancer occurs in 5-10% of all breast cancer cases. About half of the hereditary breast cancers show a mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA 2, while the rest of hereditary breast cancer cases are due to mutations in Non-BRCA-genes.
Follow-up after breast cancer consists of breast examination, counselling, discussing individual side effects of for example antihormonal therapies or long term side effects after chemotherapy and finding individual solutions to maintain a good quality of life.
